    What the title says.

Pressing shift cancels the name edition, works perfectly when renaming from the inspector.

Guess I'm the only one with this problem? (shrug)

@cesarpo I still think this is a bug, but it seems like I can evade it by disabling scripts that are messing with the editor. For example I have one script that uses OnWillRenderObject to update a texture in the editor and even though it's not touching any of the objects in question and the script doesn't necessarily cause the issue (sometimes the script can be on without a problem), disabling it while I renamed solved the problem immediately. I hope this bug is resolved soon, and I hope my very late message helps someone. Cheers.

Everything was completely fine, then out of the blue, this.
Nothing will fix it - not restarting Unity, not restarting computer...

Right before this problem, I had an issue where no UI elements could be moved. Yes, I had the correct tool selected, and no, none of my components were collapsed, but the second I started trying to drag an element (any element), it would just be deselected, like something was stealing focus.

I suddenly had this problem as well. It turns out if I disable gizmos in the scene view everything works again. I am not sure why this happened in the first place, everything was working fine then this out of the blue.

I felt like I should add that this only happens to me with a certain project. My other projects don't suffer from this. It must be a project-specific setting or editor script that's causing it. I wish someone from Unity would chime in. heh

Another update... I remembered that I recently had an issue with editor layout presets not working right. I was told by Unity support that my layout was saved before they made a change that broke old layouts, and if I close the offending window and re-open it then re-save my preset, it should be fine, and that worked.

This made me think, I wonder if this is another broken layout-related issue, so I reloaded my (newly) saved layout in this project, and suddenly the issue stopped happening.

Well, scratch the last update. It works for a little while, then reverts back to not workin again for no apparent reason.

Seems to consistently happen when I can see my UI objects in the scene view. When they're not in view, it works correctly. Definitely a bug in Unity.

I have narrowed this down to the "Placeholder" text object of the TMP_InputField object collection. If I deactivate the Placeholder, then the problem goes away. Or, if there is nothing from the UI showing in the scene view when there's a TMP_InputField, the problem goes away. There's some link between the TMP_InputField's Placeholder being visible and this issue.

How do you get Unity's attention around here in Unity's support forums?

Post less (you can edit your previous posts) and submit bug report. This is a community support forum, unity people come only occasionally. You also can visit the TMP/UI topic for advise, @Stephan_B, the brain of TMP is very active there. (Although I just summoned him with this mention, he may swing by.)

Posting less doesn't get Unity's attention more, that's for sure.
I've submitted lot of bug reports, and they usually get barely more attention than these forums, honestly. Most get closed with "won't fix" resolution. I'd like some acknowledgement of issues once in a while.

I didn't keep editing my same post because there was time in between thoughts. If someone read the first comment and I edited it, they might not see my followup thoughts.

I'm in the process of uploading my ENTIRE PROJECT with a bug report in the hopes that Unity can reproduce it since I couldn't recreate it in a new project. It's taking forever to upload.

Just happened to me, randomly, a while after updating MacOS to 12.2 (Using Unity 2020.3.26f1).

Every time I press shift, I notice that the Scene window's crosshair changes, and the object's name I'm editing loses focus. I've tried a restart, and even refreshing Unity's layout with no luck..
