Hey guys, I was going to try Unity 4.6, but not sure if I should because it says not to use it for like official development kinda stuff.

Are there like a lot of bugs in it?
I really wanna try it for the sake of the GUI stuff, but if it's all buggy I'll just stick with 4.5.

I am the same way very cautious about using the "latest and greatest" for the reason you mentioned. The times I have grabbed the latest & greatest of well nearly any software (Windows, office, whatever) it was buggy as hell. So I wait until it has been out for a few months at least and the inevitable big patch (service packs, etc) are released to fix most of the bugs in it. Got bit too many times when upgrading to latest version of dev software and broke my projects.

But.... BUT... I actually just downloaded 4.6 RC2 this weekend and it works fine with my platform game. No change in behavior at all. Of course, I made a copy of the project folder first just to be on the safe side and I also installed 4.6 in a new location.

If you look at the release history for 4.6 they seem to have been releasing patches for a while now to resolve issues. I think RC2 is like the 22nd or 23rd release.

You can run two versions of Unity side by side. So you can continue using 4.5 for your current projects and only use 4.6 for testing and learning.

Thanks for the heads up buddy!

I'll try it, I hope this GUI system is way better. I haven't even looked into it yet.
But I hear about it being better, so anything that helps then okay LOL.

    I'll do that.

    Thanks!

Can the new UI be used for mobile Joysticks?
I'm watching the learning section, but I don't see anything about mobile development
    only buttons.

(Want to make joysticks) with this.

No no I meant just lock the joysticks into a certain area, like the Joysticks that come with Standard Assets Mobile. YOu can move them but they are restricted to a certain area.

I know that the movement of player is different, just meant move the GUI in a restricted area kinda thing...

I appreciate the links, but I'd rather just do it my self LOL.

Yeah, I take it in stride if I can do it my self, it's a lot of headache when I can just buy it, but it don't feel the same as making it your self :)

    Thanks buddy.

Yes, it's perfectly possible to build an on-screen virtual joystick with the new UI system. You implement the dragging interface and do some tests to constrain positions to a rectangle.

I've been actively transforming our game from our-own UI solution to uGUI since beta 21, which I felt like it was pretty stable, and RC3 looks like its gonna be the official release version.

For standalone games? Go for it! For web builds? Even Unity in 4.6 warns you that's a no go!

Apply this to any question about 4.6 that isn't clear in an existing FAQ / bug report :D

Related question: Will Unity 4.6 initially be a better (more stable less buggy) development/release platform than the early versions of Unity 5?

Well, bugs are most common in new areas, and Unity 5 has a ton more new areas than 4.6 (which isn't quite "4.5 with uGUI", but definitely much closer to it than to 5). So the odds are good that 4.6 will have fewer problems.

    "4.6 safe to use?"

Yes, but I would definitely wear protection. Better safe than sorry.

Lmao that made me laugh for real hahahaha.
Better watch out, Unity Asset Store doesn't want Love Sounds, so the Asset Store might get mad about having protection too! lmao hahaahahaha.
