    4.5 Has just been released with loads of additions, improvements and bug fixes.

    Please remember to back-up your projects before upgrading! You can install multiple versions of Unity, here’s how


    We’ve introduced a module manager for all mobile add-ons, from now on you will be able to update iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8 Blackberry add-ons without downloading the full editor installer.


    Unity Remote 4 has been upgraded, there is no more WiFi latency when playtesting on iOS devices, we’ve also added support for the full range of iOS device inputs including accelerometers, gyroscopes and camera images. This is available for free on the App Store and Google Play.


    We’ve massively improved shader importing, it’s now much faster. We’ve added support for Sparse Textures and added stereoscopic rendering on DX 11.1. We’ve also introduced OpenGL ES 3.0 support on iOS devices (starting with A7 devices) Support for 3D textures in OpenGL ES 3.0. Check the release notes for more on this.


    There’s new Hierarchy Window sorting where sorting of elements is now based on transform order instead of name. There’s new 2D Joint Gizmos and a 2D physics component; WheelJoint2D.


    There also a boat load of bug fixes, if you find some of these bugs aren’t in fact fixed, please report them again.

    Seriously, as soon as the new GUI drops, serious development for my next project starts.

    By the way what's the chance in the future we'll get an easier way to upgrade Unity versions without having to download a 1gb file everytime? Like maybe an updater that gives you an option to upgrade or just install a new version?

    This is about exposing the Mesh compression functionality (which you could always use for imported meshes in the Mesh Importer inspector), so that people can enable it for meshes created from code. Like, when you create meshes from editor scripts, but don't want them to take up too much space in shipping builds.

    Also new module manager will help people with rubbish internet potentially help the Sustained Engineering team roll out fixes quicker. An important release.

    4.6 is just GUI and that is going really well as far as I can tell, so time to raise the excitement levels to 4.5!

    Remember to back up project before installing a new major version of Unity each time :)

    I saw there were some WebCam updates. Did MacOSX get the webcam re-enabled or re-written?

    There was an issue that was stopping people form submitting to the mac app store if they used the webcam. (however I distribute off of my own website and steam).

    Any word on if this is working or if this is coming back again?

    I've released an updated version of Cube Mark with 4.5.

    I get a cube mark of 54667 on the webplayer version.

    It looks like there is a slight improvement in 3D performance but version 4.2 was faster. Cubemark thread.

    On my current project just updated it to 4.5 and it was running at 40-60+ fps in 2D and now it is quickly dropping to 20fps. It uses a lot of 2D physics anyone else seeing this?

    The documentation says that Unity Remote 4 sends gyroscope data to the editor, but a quick tester script shows only (0,0,0,1) from Input.gyro.attitude. Is there something else I have to do to make it send this data? (I am seeing the feed and touch input is received just fine)

    I was just about to do the Unity Learn 2D tutorial so this is nice update. Now I wonder if I should buy 2D Toolkit? Although I probably will anyway, in case they makes nice extensions to the Unity 2D.

    I don't believe tk2d makes extensions to Unity2D's features; in fact, it's a completely separate system.

    For the time being, you can still use the bug reporter for errors in the docs. We are currently looking at having a more direct interaction with users about the docs but we haven't decided yet if this will be a forum section, mailing list or something else. With the new-look docs, we also have the ability to make online updates as frequently as we like, at least for the manual; more direct communication should let us get doc errors fixed more quickly without the time and nuisance of filing a bug report.

    On a Mac Mini (os X 10.7.5 / Core 2 Duo / Intel GMA 950) I get in your web player:

    Those may have been effected if you use assets to downloading via streaming while running because I have DSL am downloading Unity 4.5.

    Should be "backed up". Also, unless I missed it I didn't see any mention of the GetEnumerator() returning System.String on iOS bug but I'm pretty sure that was fixed in this release.

    I go thought the Unity official documents now rather than sort through Answers and the general poor readability of it. Although I'm game if they turn it on off.

    Nothing is more ill then a sad news story with a stream of asinine comments underneath it that you can't turn off, not that making a game in Unity is comparable but a lot of that is not appropriate for a professional work place.

    Now if they want to include a ranked list of open sourced personal / company projects you upload because you've finished the project and it flopped (or maybe not - id source for old games was traditional).

    What we have in mind is more about users suggesting changes to the main content of pages (and possibly supplying some of that content) rather than adding notes to the end of the page. You can, of course, do this already with a bug report if you want to but we are hoping for something a bit more streamlined and accessible.

    I figured out the gyroscope thing, Input.gyro.enabled must be set to true. (Weird, did that change? My gyro camera worked on device previously and I've never set this property)

    However, I cannot see how to access the webcam on the device. Looping through the WebCamTexture.devices only gives me the device built in to my desktop. How do I access the on-device cameras? Or is this a bug and I should file a report?

    Yes, 4.5 has a working mac web cam implementation again - which was rewritten to use the latest APIs from Apple, so it will be valid for MAS submissions.

    Didn't we decide in your other forum post that that isn't a bug?

    (I did look to see if you'd submitted a bug, just in case, but didn't see one from you. If you do have a bug you've reported with your FBX attached, PM me the case number.)
