    Great news!

@Aurore: Could you please forward this to your deployment services: GET THE DEMO PROJECT TO THE ASSET STORE!!!

There is no need to include this on every single release... and the size is reaching 830MB... People have requested this so often...

    Thanks :)

I'd just downloaded the latest (last!) Blackberry beta, then official 4.2 comes along within minutes. So do I switch straight over to 4.2 for my BB projects, or is beta version 4.2.0f4 still viable for any reason ?

    Thanks though!

Just as I'm going to bed :) Oh and did we get full pathfinding or just navmesh making? Ether is cool the first will earn a Level 5 hug.

And Open GL es3.0?!?!?! Unity is one step above Nvidia!

FREE Navmesh? YES! (Although I'm sort of disappointed that i spent about a month getting my own to work now) :)

Also, 833mb? There goes my internet for about a week. :(

    Awesome! I'm already downloading :)

Here's what i'm looking forward the most:

    - Image Effects, a batch of new goodies and improvements (update Image Effects package!)
    - Shadows: Implemented static dynamic batching for shadow casters shadow collector pass. Note: many shadow casters can be batched even if they use different materials! They will be batched as long as the actual shadow caster shader material properties affecting it are the same.
    - Platform switching, player building and asset importing can be cancelled now! How cool is that?
    - Preset Libraries

There's more, but i don't want to fill the page with features :D

    EDIT:
Just one more that's very important:
    - Lightmapping: Made baking of terrains much quicker when Color Space is set to Linear.

Just tried 4.2 and Navmesh is now broken. It ignores unwalkable areas where no Navmesh is drawn.
I'll experiment a little bit more, maybe something changed and I have to declare unwalkable areas in another way... $brokennavmesh.png

I don't know why or how, but I believe I have a false posivtive, in C:\Unity\MonoDevelop\Addins\Boo\boo\booi.exe

Once installation finished, my AV went haywire over it, I made a report of it as a false positive.
Should I have any problems, using MonoDevelop?

Great update, and with short testing seems to work as expected :D

    @StudentGameDev
Avast deleted my first install file because of that same reason.

Is the Windows Store/Phone deployment Windows only? I'm seeing Windows Store player and Windows 8 Phone Player not supported in this build? The Blackberry stuff is available. I'm on Mac OSX 10.8.4.

    Thanks,

Linear needs hardware state / graphics library support to work. I don't believe it's available in GLES2.x 3.x might have something but I have not read the spec yet.

Just as iOS and Mac deployment is only available on OSX, WP8 and Win8 Store deployment is only available on Windows 8. The dev tools for those platforms incur the restrictions, not Unity. At least with a Mac you can install Win8 with bootcamp ;)

I would assume the Win8Store/WP8 players aren't supported because they generally don't give the performance suitable for testing Unity powered games.

Remember folks, pretty much anything you bought on the Asset Store (most notably being Playmaker) will cease to function...or I just have terrible luck.

As much as I want to, it's difficult to become excited about new versions when faced with the inevitable wait for Assets to get updates.

    Otherwise yay! :D

    Terrible luck it is then!

...and I'm assuming by your confident declaration that all your other assets work fine as well?

I would love to be found completely false in my assessment.

My three favourite parts of this update are as follows:

    1) Free shadows
    2) Quad primitive
    3) Free Navmesh

Still no MeshCollider bug fix? (MeshCollider disabled, but gets enabled when object moves.)

And they've missed the most crucial editor problem - no "Create Empty" in the Hierarchy drop-down.

The new GUI should be ready in the 4.4 release by the end of the year. It would an awesome Christmas present. According to some guy from unity. Can't tell more.

Not sure what happened but I got locked into a bug where light mapping kept crashing during the light prob segment of the export - had to clear all the light maps to resolve it.

    Otherwise looks good.

Can anyone comment on monodevelop? - I see no mention of it in the release notes. Has it got any attention at all??? because it is sorely needed for a long, long time now.

Let me assure you that MonoDevelop is not forgotten.

But I don't believe there was something new in 4.2.

Considering the time between releases, I doubt we'll see a 4.4 by the end of this year unless Unity really speeds up their release cycle. I'd rather have them continue to make a stable product than push things out too quickly. Think about it, 4.2 was just released and this is in the beginning of Q3. Therefore it would make sense to have a 4.3 release in Q4.

Rather than any new GUI's, I'd rather see PhysX and MonoDevelop updated.

I put 4.2 on my Surface Pro (running Windows 8.1 preview) and now it crashes when it tries to open my project. Seems to be crashing when it goes to import JPGs and PNGs. Anyone else seeing this behavior?

Not my bad if people from unity announced that in private. And since he told us as well that the 4.2 would be released by the end of July I think they are right on target.

Exactly the same here :( Surface Pro, Windows 8.1. Can't tell whether it crashes when importing JPGs or PNGs as it crashes immediately on startup without showing any Progress

    EDIT:
I quickly looked up Unity's command line arguments. No idea why but
"Unity.exe -force-opengl" did it for me so far :)

    EDIT2:
Looks like -force-d3d11 works better - OpenGL mode is very unstable when entering playmode

    I just want 2 things :
    - FIRST : Update that creepy mono :'(. And bring us a decent GC please. MonoDevelop has now 2 major version. (4.0.9) and 4.0.10 released soon in final version.
    - SECOND : Bring me some news on your GUI system ! Even if I'm pretty sure we will have nothing before Unite 2013 :)
    - THIRD : Nothing more than MonoDev GUI

    @Liszto
Seconded on your first point !
I'm good with NGUI for now, so I can wait for the next gen gui system.

Too bad the subversion support hasn't made it into this release.
The source of the version plugins is hosted on github.
Can anybody with perl installed give this repo a whirl and build the subversion plugin ?

    P.S.
    Damn this thing loads fast!
I haven't been able to appreciate the splash screen yet :)
