Question 3d ingame rendering vs image sequence

so i would really like to use some image sequences (like a video) in my game in different areas of my ui instead of ingame 3d rendering. the reason why is because i can get better graphics this way and it might be more performant than ingame rendering.
is this a good or bad idea and why ?
what file type should i use for this ?
is it more performant compared to ingame 3d rendering ?

Make sure you test it on all targets you contemplate because as you already know, video codecs are ALWAYS difficult.
