Hey there guys. I'm going to get a second Macbook Pro. My current one is equipped with M1 Pro 8/14 (base 14 inch). It works fine, but Unity Editor tends to drop down to 30 FPS on an external 4K screen. I was wondering if the higher tier SoC's like the M1 Pro 16 GPU version or even the M1 Max 24 or 32 GPU versions would be a huge difference. I want to get one before the sales end so I am in need of an answer.

I'm completely fine working with my current laptop, but this is my personal laptop and I need one solely for work. Thanks in advance.

Well what type of games do you usually make?

Also, do you happen to hear a sound from the computer when you hit play on any unity project? Like a ssd sound. If you don't know, could you do me a favor and when hitting play on a project could you put your ear on the keyboard. Pls, and thank you.

I make 3D mobile games. I use a lot of assets and libraries, so the projects tend to be bloated. I don’t add anything I don’t use though.

Also I tried to hear the sound on Play mode, it’s like reaaaaally faint but it’s there. I can’t hear it if I don’t touch my ears to the keyboard. Never heard it outside even in a silent night.

The one that I have is the M1 Max 24 Core. It runs in unity beautifully (But I make 2D games), It has good battery. The performance is good. So I would recommend the M1 Max 24 Core for the battery and performance. The M1 Max has double the ProRes encode and decode engines, and Double video encode engines.

Thanks for telling me about the sound thing by the way, I'm pretty sure it's normal then.

Thanks for the feedback. Since you mentioned the ProRes engines, I wonder if they help with Unity. I'm assuming the extra GPU cores help more, but it would be really helpful to hear if they ACTUALLY make a difference.

My overall experience with the M1 Pro base model is fine. I can live with the slowdowns, but it would be nice if they didn't happen. I'm assuming it has to do with Apple Silicon optimizations cuz it happens a lot with a certain asset (Dreamteck Splines).

I need to do more research on it.

Yeah I think you need to more research on it. Also, I am wondering, does unity start lagging when you put in those specific assets?
