Official 3D Game Kit Official Thread

    The Content Team at Unity have been working on something we like to call a ‘Game Kit’. We've officially release our 3D Game Kit.

    What is a Gamekit?



    A project designed in such a way so that gameplay, art and puzzles can be created without using code in Unity. This project is perfect to get more familiar with Unity whether you’re an artist, designer or even just starting your game development journey.

    Within the Kit you will find a collection of gameplay elements, tools and systems that can be hooked up without code. We’ve also created a small game example using this system.



    What is it for?


    We’re trying to provide Unity beginners, artists and designers a little more agency in the Editor without needing to code, while hopefully allowing you to get more familiar with how Unity works.

    Download the project off the Asset Store and open up the Getting Started guide or view it on our Learn site. Follow the steps to give you an idea of how things are put together, you can also play the game and start digging around who it’s made to get some ideas. There is more in depth documentation in the Reference Guide in the project and on our Learn site.



    So get creating and we hope you enjoy this Kit!

    Always a pleasant surprise to trip over a new post from Unity while fooling around on the internet.

    Also people with misplaced priorities will stop dogging me about updating now, so that's good.

    EDIT: I think we should talk about game asset flips for the next two pages because they're a real problem for real developers and totally why nobody is buying my pong clone which is itself just a mishmash of tutorials I found on YouTube.

    Tried importing with 30 GB of free space, still getting errors.
    Is it possible to put this project on a public git repository?

    This project is made to be used in Legacy at the moment, there is a way to get it working with Lightweight but we have not documented it. The next projects we release will be in a Render Pipeline though so it will be covered soon.

    We'll look into getting something up in a public repo.

    Thanks for this awesome example pack!
    I saw that ellen and her animations are not humanoid. Although we can retarget them, it prevents us from easily switching the character model like in the third person character from the standart assets, right?

    When starting a new scene with the kit tools -> create new scene. Whats the best way to add to the terrain?

    The tutorial goes over adding objects on top of the terrain and the Vegetation/Rock painters but not sure what the best method to expand the terrain would be?

    Seems like some use of pro-builder would be the way to go, just not sure if the best way is just add more untextured quads with pro builder and go add textures to them one by one or if there's some faster way, thanks!

    @Aurore Haven't try the latest version in 2018.1,

    but i'm spammed with Invalid AABB in 2018.2 beta, and reaching a point when the game finally crawled to halt due error spamming,
    enemy are randomly not visible in 2018.2, i guess the found invisibility cheat since they can attack me and i can't see them :p
    stutter when ellen receive a damage in 2018.2
    and some random stutter in 2018.2
    yeah i know those are happened in unity beta release, just want to let you know about it

    How does this AI work. There is not much documentaion about it nor are there any comments in code. How does enemy check if you are near them. I kow there is a targetscanner script but i cant see from where it is called

    After converting ellen and her animations to humanoid the whole movement feels jerky and broken.
    The forward anim has a wrong y rotation. Multiple anims (respawn, roll, landin,..) have a y position offset and the overall smoothness is gone.

    Dont get me wrong - i really appreciate this content - but it seems like the basic idea behind this pack is to be a good starting point for beginners. I guess all of this could be easily fixed in the import settings of the animation (im going to try this now) :)

    You just need to change y postion based on char foot in animation

    Yep, im on it :) My point was that in a later version of this project the character should be humanoid by default.

    Am I missing a setting somewhere?

    I can see the ground when in play mode or game view but not in the scene window. Any idea on how to fix? I've just basically imported this into a blank project in 2018.1

    Sounds strange. I imported it to 2018.2_0b3 and had no problems.

    I've finally figured it out - the layer was hidden. It must have been a hangover from my default layout settings from previous versions of Unity.

    There are lot of gun shooting animation but these mechanics doesnt seems to be implemented yet

    If I understand it correctly it's okay to use the code and editor extensions in commercial videogame projects but not models, animations, audio or textures? If so then that's quite fair.

    That is correct, we made this choice as we wanted to have squash and stretch in her animation to keep the cartoon vibes. Although funnily enough now this is slightly more doable with humanoid now (or coming soon I can't remember). We completed Ellen and her animation a long time ago.

    Using Pro Builder would be the best option, a guide will be coming soon on how to set this all up and use PolyBrush too.


    We haven't tested this project in 18.2 yet, you're a pioneer! We'll log those issues you've found in that version. When the beta gets a little more mature we'll start the update process but for now it works for 18.1.

    Yup, this was a feature that was cut unfortunately, since we had a lot of extra animations done for it we still wanted to include them, someone might find use for them somewhere to learn, I hope :)


    These look like you're missing the Packages of TextMesh Pro, Cinemachine etc. Did you download the latest version of the project in 18.1? Can you try closing the project and opening it again. If not can you post what is contained in the 'Packages' folder in the root of your project.

    We're working on having the release version of the Kit available through GitHub for those of your who can't download it through the Asset Store. Sorry for those issues, we're not sure what's up but we're investigating.

    PURE GOLD!! It is a great resource for the community to learn from. The scripts are awesome!
    Things like that make me glad with Unity!

    IMO this is a perfect match for the LW pipeline, i hope this will be ported soon ;)

    @Aurore Oh btw, just curious. Since you guys decide to use GPU instancing for the foliages, is it more performance for GPU and CPU? i would like to use the same technique for grasses. I hope you can give me some info about that or ping some one who expert about it to chime in.

    Performance issue...
    On a five month old Macbook Pro it takes four minutes to get through the loading screen, and then I get about one fps for play. Doesn't seem right. This is an MBP 2.8GHz i7, 16GB, and a Radeon Pro 555.

    I manually download some packages and clear some erros, but i still having 4 errors (sorry for my english)
    I downloaded the program (unity) yesterday, and the kit obviously by asset store (twice) I have just 1 file in "packages" folder:
    "manifest.json" its size is 1kb

    Hey, a pleasure to explore and learn with this kit game!

    I'm having some issues about importing my own character; Tried to impliment as I'm used to (invector base locomotion base) and modifying Ellen with my own skin/parameters.

    The best result that I've reached was a fixed pose walking and jumping with the sound, but the animations didn't work.

    I would be very interested about any kind of tips or recommendations!

    Now I know this is probably going to seem very much in the mould of "make my game for me", but are there any plans to expand the gameplay elements to allow Ellen to push/pull objects, climb walls/pull up onto top of objects/ledges, interacting with levers/wall switches, etc.?

    Or at least some hints as to how we could implement these sorts of actions and how to integrate new animations into Ellen's controller? :)

    I think 3d game kit being for builtin renderer is awesome. It demonstrates that builtin is still very much a viable choice for developers who want full freedom to port. It's done so well I thought it was some new fangled tech at first!

    just curious.. can I change the amount of gras on the rocks with a slider ? I can't find it.. :cool:
    I know it has something to do with the shader..

    @peter_unity551 This was an assumption on my part though the reason I asked is, primarily, because of notorious acts committed by certain developers who put in little or no effort into making an original game and profit from using a game kit they purchased. In other words, an asset flipper.

    If people can use the physical contents then that's great but I assume that such assets are only for demonstration purposes to show what can be achieved.

    Could you please create a tutorial on how to change the character correctly? We are using one of the free Mixamo ones with rigging. Ultimately, we are trying to create a UI to let the user pick a character from several. So a code-based approach is fine. Pretty please with sprinkles on top?

    Hello, when I lunched the demo I saw the scene was being rendered in one way for a one or two seconds but one second later the rendering is changed again and it looks more brightly (see attached screenshots). I have the same behaviour when I build the demo and lunch it on my device. Why does it happen? I would like the scene is beeing rendering like at the begining.
