    Hey!

I'm new to unity, and I'm trying to see what I can make. I want to build a 2D survival game, that has the camera at a birds eye view. But there is one problem, how do I do it? Is there any tutorials on how to make a game like this and how to actually make the inventory/interaction menus. It would help a lot. At the moment I don't even have a clue on how to make the map. (I do have photoshop/Ilustrator experience if that helps)

Thanks man that really helps. Also, it's been a long time since i've seen the 'let me google that for you' link its really great. I did try to google it but I when I searched for birds eye view, I got no results. Now I know how to call it. :)

And another FYI (because I stumbled over this myself): For Top-Downer in 2D please also be aware that pathfinding/navmeshes don't work in the 2D engine, yet. So you need to switch to either 3D (with 2D mechanics) or a different pathfinding solution like A*.

The best skill you can have as a developer, is knowing what to search for. Knowing how to program is nice, but if you know what it is you are wanting to do, someone somewhere has done it. (Most likely)

You can have the orthographic camera look down on the x/z plane, then you can use NavMesh.

@Chris Trueman ... then you can't use the 2D features anymore because they are set to work in X/Y.

I think that pathfinding would be really hard to switch planes. Maybe they should allow 2D features to work on the XZ plane. It'd be great for 3D games as well (i.e. range detection).

NavMeshes are not really for 2D, you would need to use the 3D functions to have it work like you wrote. You can still use it for a 2D game, it just makes it more complicated. Sorry I was half asleep when I replied, it was probably a "half" read and go; "yeah you can use a navmesh", not really thinking it through.

Unity said they'd look into getting Navmeshes to work with 2D and it's "under review" in Feedback for several months (over a year) now, even. With Unity5 and all I think it's safe to asume that it will take some time until it's being implemented for release, though. It's sad since I wanted to use it for a 2D game and had just bought Pro when I found out that Navmesh didn't work for it. Until it does there are alternatives, fortunately. I still hope that it's being integrated natively soon.
