    New Build TheSearch v1.1

    TheSearch v1.1 Windows 64 bit.
    TheSearch v1.1 Windows 32 bit.
    TheSearch v1.1 Mac 32 bit.

    $TheSearch15.jpg

    12 hours of added work, now 36 hours total Peter and me been working on it.

    Many improvements map, image fx, vegetation, sound, manual DOF, skybox, sun, save position, save menu, and many minor tweaks...
    The winners will be anounced by Peter, let the new screenshot competition begin! :D

    The graphics are ultra high, you can dial them a lot down with performance options. Keep in mind we are pushing the limits of Unity here...

    Controls:
    Left Mouse Button -> Make a screenshot.
    Mouse Scroll Wheel -> Zoom in/out.
    Middle Mouse Button -> Reset Zoom.
    L -> Depth Of Field Lock/Unlock

    Tab -> Map.

    WASD/Arrows -> Move.
    Left/Right Shift -> Run.
    Space -> Jump.
    M -> Show Setup Menu.
    F -> Show Framerate.

    Numpad 8462 -> Move sun.

    Enjoy!!

    I've been searching for awhile (10+ hours) :)
    I honestly hope not too many hints are dropped and everyone is just searching hard, a colorful egg just over three feet that can possible be seen at a distance.

    I'll be excited to check out the new build.

    I also had to run the current build in a sandbox in order to create a screenshot and export the images into paint without the program freezing my computer, I'm not sure why that was happening.

    Actually we said we would give away two prizes for the inofficial inital round but we could not decide for only two, so we let a third slip in and let the contest start over somewhat more officially ;)

    You tried to let it be on like that for a couple of minutes? Because it maybe takes some time to load even if it is not responding it is maybe still loading, mine load in a sec but i got a desktop computer so that is a whole different thing but try let it be on for a couple of minutes if you haven't already :)

    Awesome! On the new build, there are more details now and it runs more smooth. It creates a screenshot in the data directory no problem without the computer freezing and me having rebooting anymore with pressing ctrl, or alt+tab. No more needing to run the program in a sandbox. Great job.

    thank you.

    happy egg hunting everyone.

    Hey Chad,

    I hope you unzipped right this time :p. I remember me making a build for you 4 times, and then we found out at last your unzipper didn't work :p:p. The 32 bit is at 55%, hope that one works. It might be do to your onboard video card...Did you try fastest mode?

    I am totally speechless... What an amazing environment, hats off to you guys... I started with the egg hunt but found the environment so beautiful that I forgot about the egg and started playing around with the controls and believe me you have created something incredible here... Just playing around with the terrain and sun shows the potential of this tool...

    Mine stops responding when I hit 3.05 or 3.07 GB of memory

    I can play with little to no grass, but as soon as I bump it up … :(

    Every once in awhile my heart skips a beat because I think I might glance at an egg. Not yet.
    This is seriously wanting me to script some AI for some One on One interesting challenges.
    I'm really digging the photorealism.

    This is awesome, as an hobbyist photographer I am just having fun walking around and taking shots... as an helicopter fan , I miss my Robinson 44... (I will help Chris on UnityFS Helicopters...)

    Here are some shots from the other side of mount Ranier (I was there this summer, but those are Terrain Composer...)

    View from midway up

    Love seeing these assets come together to produce such an amazing environment.
    But please optimize this to get playable fps! I know you are pushing unity, but I was hoping to get this quality and buy all these assets to have a playable game. Now that I see these assets combined, sure its impressive visually, but Id love to see 3-4x the amount of fps for it to actually be usable for my project.
    Is lacking more advanced occlusion culling the issue? Or the terrains not optimized enough?

    It would be nice if it saved your last position when it crashes so you don't restart at the same point every time

    TheSearch uses standard Unity terrain. RTP has been very optimized by Tom, he's a genius programmer that squized every performance optimilization out of outdated 'buggy' Unity terrain engine and turned it into AAA quality rendering, behond anyone would ever think possible with Unity. We can be all proud of Tom!! What engine does beat RTP?. However the Unity terrain engine itself is almost not updated for many years by Unity and pretty buggy when trying to make a shader for it that goes a little deeper to get more AAA.

    The terrain engine core needs to be updated and optimized by the Unity staff, as these levels as third party developers we have no access to. The main reason for performance hit is the massive grass and 400.000 trees. We think that Unity is looping the whole tree and grass array for checking what part has to be drawn, as framerate still is a lot lower even with close distance view and low density vegetation settings (while large tree and grass arrays are used). QuadTree datastructure would make it x times faster.

    Tom the developer of RTP will be working on an entire new grass system, that would be mind blowing visually and performance wise ;).

    Unity seems to be focussing on Mobile platforms, which is totally understandable from a marketing perspective. Although I think it be a great idea if Unity puts like 1 or 2 staff developers on the terrain to get this improved core terrain engine. For good marketing reasons also, as the Oculus rift consumer version is comming and terrain is hugely important for almost every Oculus Rift game. Also awesome terrain is eyecandy and invite for new developers to choose for Unity as their engine...

    I think it's time for our terrain community to think of a way to show this importance to Unity, the engine which we all love, as Unity has serious potential for AAA massive terrain game development, but also for mobile terrain and small terrain projects, a shiny polished up to date terrain engine is what we need! Including a 64 bit Unity Editor :D

    Would love to have this in Unity Editor also. However a crash is a crash, we will make an auto save every x seconds though in the next version ;). I think a crash happens because the graphic settings are too high, especially high grass draw distance may trigger a grass, you can lower it in the menu...
