    Hey!
Usually by this time the next's year alpha is out for public testing. I was wondering if there's an estimate as to when the next alpha might land?

Unless something has changed, they are even one month late... :(

A lot of issue tracker issues have had 2021.1.0a1 marked on them for a while now so it definitely exists internally. We tend to get public alphas nowadays around alpha 3~4 which would probably mean anything from a week to one month from now before that happens.

That version is not officially released (at least yet) so there's no notes for that. There are chances that Unity will never publish that version even.

Point Light shadows really rely more of this PR getting merged: https://github.com/Unity-Technologies/Graphics/pull/1616 It's not in yet so there's no telling if it'll make it to URP 10 (2020.2+) or if it'll only get included in URP 11 (2021.1).

"Overall, the cost of adding Universal RP Point Light Shadows to the scene, is less than the cost of adding Built-In RP Point Light Shadows to the same scene." (..gets tattoo across his back URP FOREVER with shadows of a point light extending outward beneath it)

    Hi everybody,

For some clarity about the build of 2021.1.0a2 that @laurentlavigne shared, this is a nightly build and not something we have officially published. So what @rz_0lento said is correct. Nightly builds may or may not be published at a later point as an official release. Before that happens, we put the builds we want to publish through a week of internal testing to make sure they don't cause any major problems. Please keep in mind that rogue builds like the one above, although hosted by Unity, didn't go through this testing process so be extra cautious.

We currently host builds like this publicly in order to enable external QA teams to test the produced version.

Thumbs up for the clarification :)

With being extra cautious in mind (and just for clarity sake), I assume neither @laurentlavigne nor we other users get in trouble for testing this version?

Because my understanding of this is: It circulated on Telegram for whatever reason, so it's considered a undesired leak.

Transparency edit by me: Replaced the word "punished" with "in trouble" and removed the full quote.

There will be no punishment or trouble from our side. It is a public file after all.

We're not quite there yet. There's some issues that we need to fix before we can start publishing the builds as alphas.

The punishment is included by using an untested version anyway ;)

The reward will be that you get @Peter77's RTX if you ever log a bug that he hasn't.

    New subforum open now: https://forum.unity.com/forums/2021-1-alpha.567/

I'd also want to note that this is apparently different from the earlier leaked version, at least it has different hash on the link.

Anyway, let the bug hunt begin :D

(Unity UI is notoriously bad when you have 125% scaling on the monitor but this is new)

Do note that even if Unity has internally fixed something for some future version, it does take some time for it to propagate to all development branches. Looking at the alpha 2, it seems there are many things that even exist on current 2020.2 betas that haven't yet gotten ported to this release and this is pretty common, especially for the first releases.

@APSchmidt If you want to work with a version that's not working on Linux right now, maybe you could run the Windows version in a virtual machine? I don't know the complexity or performance etc.. just a thought.

Sorry about that, we know that the situation sucks. We've been trying to fix it for quite a while now and new issues keep popping up with the fix. It's about to be merged to 2021.1 and then subsequently backported to 2020.2.
