Feedback 2021.1 a8 and also a9 - ALL templates start in safe mode - but there's no errors

    Hi Guys

    Between the 3D template and the HDRP template, any new project I start, startups with this:

    I enter safe mode to see what the issue is (since it can't be my fault as its brand new projects started from the templates)

    As you can see, no errors in the console!

    If I convert this project to DXR, I can't enter play mode as it too detects errors, which are nowhere to be found in the Console.

    Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041.685)
    i7 3930K
    32GB Ram
    GPU Primary - 1080Ti
    GPU Secondary - 2070 Super
    NVidia Studio Driver 456.38

    Some additional input:

    This is possibly caused by a corrupted Unity installation. A possible fix would be a clean Unity installation.

    Steps for a clean Unity installation:
    - Uninstalling Unity normally, as you would any other program
    - Deleting any leftover Unity related files and the four cache folders (This will remove personal preferences, so if you are using custom editor layouts and etc, I would suggest creating a back-up of these folders). These folders are located here:
    "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Unity"
    "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\LocalLow\Unity"
    "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Unity"
    "C:\ProgramData\Unity"
    - Cleaning your registry from any Unity related entries, either manually or using software(such as CCLeaner)
    - Installing Unity again
    - Running Unity as an administrator

    @LeonhardP Would that be regardless of version? I have something like 5 or 6 different Unity versions installed from version 2018 through to version 2021

    Did all that and started from scratch with 2020.2.2f1 and also 2021.1.0b3

    2020.2 is fine, but 2021.1 gives same result of starting in safe mode with HDRP template

    Could you please share your Editor log? There's currently a known issue in 2021.1 that prevents certain setup errors from showing in the console. The log should contain them.

    These errors don't point to any known issues but are definitely something we'd like to investigate. Could you please submit a bug report for this with the faulty project attached and reply in here with the issue ID?

    we have been unable to reproduce this, but looking at your log I am confident that you're running into a legit bug that for some reason happens for you but not for us. Would you be willing to show me the behaviour over a zoomcall? I wrote this code and should be able to at least find the source of the problem relatively quickly.

    Many thanks to newguy123 for showing me the problem:

    We narrowed it down to the project living on a network drive, and the network drive / mount being slow to report changes. So the tool that should generate the .movedfrom file does run, and it does generate the file. But when we check if it did generate the file, we "check too early", (or the drive reports incorrect information depending on how you look at it). I'm not sure if we can do much to make unity operate correctly on a filesystem where writes are not immediately readable. we'll take this into discussion internally, and we'll do some work to improve the error reporting in this case, so that the problem is not hidden in the log, but is clearly shown in the console window.

    @Lucas-Meijer I can confirm that using local ssd drive works as expected with NO safe mode errors. Also, for interest, the project starts up in about 2 minutes without errors, VS 5 minutes with the safe mode error on the Synology NAS.

    Even though the NAS is slower to access, I would need to have my projects on there...

    I wrote to support and not sure if my problem warrants a bug report, I dislike to file for bugs every drop of the hat!

    The bug appears with brand new multiple installations of 2022.1.x and the problem appears on C drives which are fast. Therefore Unity installation corruption is not the case and neither is the network IO anomalies.

    That being said, I suspect your earlier assertion was correct: there is an IO timing issue or bad IO interface between Unity and the disk. But as in my case it appears on C drives, not necessarily a network IO issue.
