Both loading a project and starting a new project results in Unity freezing during startup with the dialogue window saying "Hold on" while importing assets.

Editor is completely impossible to access or use.

    Unity: 2019.2.0a9
    Ubuntu: 18.01 Bionic

    --- WORKAROUND ---

When Unity hangs during startup, quit the Hub from the taskbar/activity manager (depending on your window manager) and Unity should continue loading.

    Ditto.
Just installed on Mint 19.1 and can't get into it with existing or new project.

This is the last line in Editor.log while the app is hung
    There's no obvious errors.

If I try run Unity direct from command line, I get this output. Don't know if there's anything useful in that.

Ooh hello, I quit Hub from task bar while Unity was hung on the splash screen and after that, Unity continued to load into the application.
After closing Unity, I can now open it from the hub without problem.
    Weird one.

    - Update -
Ok, I think the problem is that I had script errors due to new ecs updates so it was hanging on compiling scripts while opening. Don't know why quitting hub allowed it to continue.
Either way, opens fine now after fixing the script errors.

Thanks @jooleanlogic! That worked for me as well. However, in my case, I still have to quit Hub from the taskbar every time I load up Unity again. Not a huge issue, at least I can get into the editor.

    Glad it helped.

As an addendum, this bug still occurs for me when switching to Unity window from vscode (recompiling) and sometimes after runtime errors during Play mode in the Editor. It's not just a startup issue. Quitting hub allows it to continue in those cases as well.

It's not a crash, it's just as if hub has taken the modal focus of Unity and it can't continue till you quit it.

The workaround also worked for me in Linux Mint 19.1 When Unity stalls loading I killed the Hub process and Unity then continued on to load properly. Thank goodness ButteryBrawler posted a work around!!!

In my case the Launching a project from the Unity Hub does not open at all it just shuts itself down immediately
