2017.2.0f3 Editor Very Slow?

Has anyone else found out that the Editor is extremely slow and choppy in 2017.2.0f3?

I'm on a high end desktop and since switching to 2017.2 from 2017.1 my development experience has become absolutely horrible. Every single alt+tab back to the editor takes 1-2s for the editor to come back. Pressing "play" to get in takes something like 10s now to launch play mode, and for the first 15-20 seconds performance in the actual game window is something like 20-25FPS, and finally it settles to go to 60FPS smoothly.

Clicking between prefabs in the Assets list can take 1-2 seconds... virtually every single thing I want to do is just *slow*.

Has anyone else had this? Any ideas how to fix?

+1. This is everyone in our studio on a Windows machine. The alt-tab is one thing and seems to get worse the longer you haven't come back to Unity. Soime editor performance I've narrowed down to perforce integration. Try turning on 'work offline' and see if that helps at all. I can barely scroll in our project window. Duplicate assets, 10 seconds. Plzhalpkthxbye.

Same issue. Had no performance problems on 5.6.2 but now takes much longer to do anything.

I noticed the same, beside being slow since the beginning, it seems to get slower while in use. And I am running on a state of the art i7 machine with 48GB of ram.
After 2-3 hours that i work, even if the stats report ingame fps of 100+ and the computer task manager shows plenty of usable resources, everything gets slow and laggy when I hit play mode.
Also, but this since 2017.1, the project folders got humungous. I think some temp/library/whatever folder levitated so that a 10 GB project is now around 17GB and I didn't add enough assets to fill up 7GB for sure.

MacOS 10.13 here, Unity is almost unusable, very laggy and all Unity based games are having more or less same problem. For example Cities Skylines, there is lot of about this on Steam forum. After upgrading to High Sierra I can't get over 3 fps. I have 2.8 GHz i7, 16 GB, Intel Iris Pro / nVidia GT 750M.

    Hey, same here.

My Unity loads up very choppily and whenever I press start to test my game in the editor, problems start to happen. While it shows normally that I have 60fps in my game, some big fps drops happen which lag the game and interrupt the testing a bit.

This started happening since I updated my NVIDIA GPU driver to version 388.00 and updating my Windows 10 to the Fall Creator's Update. However, the problems started only shortly after updating the GPU driver, so I don't think the OS has to do anything with it.

I also have these specs for my PC:
    16GB RAM
    EVGA GTX 1070 SC
    Intel i7-6700 3.4GHz

EDIT: I also rolled back the driver to see if the problem could be fixed that way. For a few days, everything worked fine but then, the same "symptoms" were being shown so I re-updated my driver. However, the same problems as before are being shown currently.

are you connected to version control in unity? if so, try turning that to offline/disabling - this fixed a similar issue from the symptoms on our windows version of unity

Hi, I can recommend one thing when the editor gets super choppy that alleviates some of the problems for me (sometimes): Use "F" on the keyboard to focus on an object. It sounds stupid, but it actually works on my end. I will go from 5FPS to a smooth 60 in the scene view just after focusing an object. It will still drop down every 3-4 minutes, but I can at least bring it up without an editor restart.

Yep, the performance of 2017.2.0f3 on both Mac and PC is terrible for us too - extremely frustrating at the moment. Once again, I'm not sure how some of the bugs we're hitting made it out the door in a full release.

I updated to the Beta version on the same PC, and although most of the problems are fixed, there is still a bit of the same problems from before (some lag but ). Also another problem comes up for me when I press the keyboard the lighting and shadows freak out a bit.

EDIT: Problems have returned. The problems were triggered however when I ran my game in non-maximized mode.

Do you have the profiler window tabbed somewhere? Does it improve the situation when you close the profiler tab?

Nope, I don't have the Profiler tab anywhere.

And I'm not using version control either.

However, regarding the focus thing, when I played around with it, things did seem to become better. The problem is still there, but very minimised.

EDIT: The problems seem to be severe only when the Game tab is not maximized in the Beta. When the Game tab is maximized, the problems are barely noticeable. This is still quite frustrating since I can't run the game within the editor and analyse values in the Inspector.

I just upgraded to 2017.2.0f3 and my editor became very laggy as well.

*Edit* I upgraded from 5.6.1f1 and it was not laggy.

I have 2 identical machines running 5.6.4p1. One machine is fine, the other has horrible lag. When I expand a group of objects in the hierarchy, I can actually see them appear one after another. Strangely, the performance seems a lot better when running the profiler.

Same here, at first I thought it was due to the project size. But I tried with a fresh project, same slow down & buggyness.

We also had a lot of issues, it turns out 2017.2 first release was a problem for many. 2017.2p1 that was released yesterday solved most of our issues, I suggest giving it a try.

I tried the patch but the problems are still there for me. I would say that the problems got worse to be honest.

EDIT: Alright, so the performance improved overall in the Unity editor. But the there are still some slight problems like the occasional lag and the reduced performance when the Game tab is not maximized.

If you are using Windows 10, try disabling your Windows Virus & threat protection. Check Task Manager that if you have service called "Windows Defender Antivirus Service" eating up your CPU. I disabled Windows Real-time protection and editor is running just fine now.

I have found nothing of the sort except for "Windows Defender Notification icon" and my overall CPU usage goes 35% at max.

It was only eating 10% of CPU for me but lagging Unity like hell, and also fan of CPU was working on very high RPM due to that service.

I haven't noticed the CPU thing... it's actually running quite normally. Same for the graphics card. However, currently when running the game in the editor, it's using 15% (less than before) and I see no sign of the anti-virus service in the Task Manager, except for the icon thing.

I had this exact same issue. Turns out it was *not* Unity. Instead it was an asset that I had installed: "A+ Asset Explorer". Uninstalling that solved the issue for me. (note: I do not know if that asset still has the issue). If you have any other editor assets installed, might want to look at those.

No, not a general 'poor performance' bug report as those never seem to get replies and without even an automated response it's never clear whether they're useful or not. The poor performance is not a showstopper as such, but using the Editor is feeling quite a grind these days.

The 2017.2.x editor on OSX runs pretty poorly for me, even on an empty project - slow app switching, poor scene view performance, slow response to mouse selections and general scene editing, and even worse when any Unity UI canvas is shown or being edited when it takes seconds to make selections or deselect anything. I'm mostly using an external display on a MacBook Pro, but I've also had retina support disabled since it was first added to the Editor too (app info > 'Open in low resolution' is ticked) because on the laptop display the Editor just grinds to a halt as the fans explode.

@greg-harding and sometimes you click on something or try to drag the camera around and the editor is just there, thinking for a moment before going "oh yeah!"

    Unity, can you please respond???

This is clearly affecting many of us. The least you can do is respond with something like "Hi guys, we are looking into the issue. Please download and use a previous build of Unity in the meantime." Some of us pay for licences and expect a quality product. Or at very least, quality support.

To be completely honest, taking into consideration the amount of users complaining about this bug so quickly after release. You should have updated your "download latest version of Unity" link to point to an older version for new comers and those of us wishing to upgrade.

How did you guys test this build in the first place? The quality of Unity right now is garbage... I've always been a huge supporter of Unity and I liked what you were doing for the Game Dev community. But lately I've been struggling to find reasons why I shouldn't move to another engine. There are 35 comments on this thread over less than 30 days. That's more than one person a day that's complaining about this. And we have one reply from a Unity member saying "Have you logged a bug?"

The editor is not "Slow" it's actually unusable!

The editor in this version is completely broken.
The problem is caused by the Editor Refocus/Refresh Process
By profiling the editor, Throttle MainMessageLoop takes multiple seconds,
Editor-prev.log :Refresh: elapses 9.285138 seconds (Nothing changed)

Generally it takes more then 10sec to refresh when switching from another app back to the Editor, making it impossible to work.

A temporary solution will be to Disable Auto Refresh in the editor Preferences, it will fix the Lag issue but again you need to Press Ctrl+R to manually refresh, or rebuild inside Visual Studio using Ctrl+Shift+B before switching back to the editor...

Oh awesome, thank you for finding that out @akismi. Did you test on 2017.2.0p1 as well? We're upgrading tonight so I'll see if its still broken first hand.

I'm getting the same problem. My game now runs at 15 fps or so using the editor. The built version of my game still performs properly but it's a real pain to test.

    Hi

You will all have to reply with your case numbers. Just because you have similar symptoms, it does not mean you have the same disease.

So post case numbers of your repros please and I've pointed Unity here but it seems they already know. But they lack case numbers. It has to go through that to get properly looked at... don't rely on someone else's issue.

My issue is more related to the editor itself (never clicking play). I notice the most lag when getting focus of the unity editor (i.e. switching focus from Microsoft visual studio to Unity Editor).

I have the same problem, when ever I click another program and go back to Unity it's unresponsive for a good 10 seconds.

Sure would be nice to get a fix to this problem, I sadly don't even have the option to disable Auto Refresh since it's forced on when using Collaboration.
