I was wondering: I see a lot of 2.5D games around (so 3D environments and characters with 2D movement and physics). Are most of those games using the 2D features in Unity, or do they mostly use 3D colliders and physics?

If they are using the 2D features, how do they create their colliders around the objects? Do they do this manually, or is there some feature in Unity I haven't found yet?

If they are using the 3D colliders and physics, why aren't they using the 2D framework?

You can use either, 3D only matters if you've got depth play.

So how would you make a polygon collider from a 3D mesh? Would you have to do this manually for every mesh?

That makes a mesh collider, not a polygon collider. You'd have to make the polygon colliders manually, yes, or make a tool to do it for you.
